What to Do When Youre Not a Good Culture Fit - The Muse
What to Do When Youre Not a Good Culture Fit - The MuseWhat to Do When Youre Not a Good Culture Fit Youve been at your new job now for a few weeks- or maybe even a few months. You feel mora settled with your role and responsibilities, youve learned who does what across the organization, and you can even find your way to the bathroom all by yourself.Theres just one thing youre struggling with, and its a big one Now that youre actually in it day in and day out, you arent sure that you mesh well with this companys culture.Maybe you prefer to thoroughly think things through before speaking up, while your team thrives on a htte nicht viel gefehlt pace and off-the-cuff responses. Or, perhaps you like an atmosphere thats lively and collaborative, but your colleagues are always heads-down in their work with their earbuds in. Now what? Should you say or do something? Or, should you just bite your tongue and deal with that uneasiness until you hit the one-year mark and are able to run for the exit? Theres no doubt about it- feeling like you arent a good match with your employers culture is anxiety-inducing. But, heres the good news I connected with some experts to find out exactly what you can do after this terrifying lightbulb moment. 1. Identify the ProblemCompany culture can be difficult to wrap your head around. While your mind might immediately jump to perks like kegerators and rooftop celebrations, you know by now that culture is way mora than that. Its the intangible things- like norms, values, and beliefs- that make up the essence of a companys culture. For example, an organization with a complex hierarchy versus one with a flat structure, or a company that prioritizes continual feedback versus just one rigid performance review.Lets face it- its pretty tough to get a sense for all of these things until you actually dive in headfirst and become a part of an organization. But before you abflug breathing heavily into a paper bag, your best first move is to take a st ep back and figure out exactly whats making you feel unsure of your new employer.Ask yourself how the culture differs from what you were expecting, says Julie Li, Senior Director of People Operations at Namely. Taking this step will help you determine why youre saddled with this uneasiness. Maybe youll realize that you just havent had a chance to connect with your team members the way you want to quite yet or that the culture is different from what youre used to- but notlage necessarily bad. Are you uncomfortable because you disagree with the culture or because its challenging? asks Laura Hamill, Chief People Officer and Chief Science Officer at Limeade. The latter could actually make for an incredible growth opportunity- but it does require you to be open and resilient. This self-reflection might also help you confirm that its the former- that you really dont mesh well with this companys approach and values. For example, its a competitive environment and you thrive in a mora suppor tive and collaborative atmosphere. Figure out where exactly your problem is. Are you unfamiliar? Are you unprepared? Or is it truly not a fit? 2. Do Something About itOnce you have an initial sense of where the disconnect is happening, its time to take action.Get to Know Your ColleaguesIts perfectly normal to feel a bit like an outsider at a new job, socially and culturally, for the first few months. Its up to you to put yourself out there and try to get assimilated in the office.Theres a place for everyone- reach out to groups within the workplace (womens group, biking group, etc.) to find other social connections and groups that might be more fulfilling, Hamill says. This effort will help you feel a little more connected and included in the office. Plus, forming those bonds will increase your comfort level with the people you work with- which means youll be a little more self-assured when it comes time to speak up about work-related matters too. Getting to know your colleagues will help you gain a better undertanding of some cultural elements you might feel uneasy about. They have more history with the company and more institutional knowledge than you do, which makes them a great resource to help you figure out why things are the way they are. As with anything, you should try your best to understand and adapt where you can before charging forward to demand change or walking away. If nothing else, youll feel more certain about your decision. Talk to Your BossYou gave it some time, put yourself out there, formed some bonds, had enlightening conversations with the people you work with, and determined that this really isnt a symptom of new job jitters. Perhaps now you understand more about the culture, but youre still not feeling confident in your ability to adapt and actually work well in it. Or, maybe things are even more serious and you fundamentally disagree with something. For example, your colleagues are proud of the fact that theyre a team of workaholics a nd youre unwilling to work endless hours. You know you shouldnt head straight for the door, but what else can you do?In either scenario, its time to talk to your boss about how youre feeling. A good way to start the conversation is to ask your manager for feedback on how youre doing so far, says Li. A more seasoned manager may even sense that youre not fully comfortable. If your supervisor doesnt pick up on your doubts, be candid (but also respectful) and detail the things youve been struggling with. Explain what youre feeling, why youre feeling that way, and any ideas you have for how things could improve. Li also mentions that you should be prepared to give as many examples as possible, so that your boss can help you pinpoint the issue and (hopefully) choose a solution.Hamill advises that this conversation is also a good time to ask some questions, such asWhat else should I understand? Are there other things I could be doing?By using prompts like these, you demonstrate that this isn t a personal attack on that companys culture, while also getting added clarity into some of the cultural aspects that you might not be used to or that you dont agree with. Employees should take the time to explore the why behind some of the norms they are experiencing, Hamill adds. Maybe theres a reason that connects to the mission that might not be clear on the surface. 3. Give it Some Time, Then Decide Whether to Stay or GoIdeally, youll end that discussion with your boss with some next steps that both of you can take to improve the situation. What next?Well, give it a little bit of time- a few weeks at the very least. You cant change your working style overnight, and culture isnt something that shifts rapidly. Plus, since the culture involves all employees, theres really only so much of it you can expect to alter. If you start to notice some positive changes, thats great news. Im willing to bet youll continue to feel more confident in your role and established within your company as time moves forward. But, if not? Well, as tough as it is to say, it might be time for you to start your next job search (while you still have a paycheck) to find a culture thats more suited to your desires and working style.I know what youre thinking now I havent been here long enough Wont this burn a bridge and tarnish my reputation for all of eternity?Your concerns are valid. But remind yourself that you deserve to work in a culture thats conducive to your success and happiness, and when the time comes, approach your boss once more to explain that you think its best that you move on. Be honest about your reason for leaving and try to give feedback that will help the company improve, Hamill says. Since you had previously approached your manager with your concerns about your cultural alignment, your departure probably wont blindside them as much as you think it will. Of course, no boss is ever happy to see an employee go- but you can hope that theyll recognize and appreciate your transparency and self-awareness and wish you well.4. Now, Make Sure This Doesnt Happen AgainNeeding to leave a company once because you werent a culture fit is understandable. However, you dont want this to happen over and over again. To avoid this same predicament in the future, make sure that youre asking the right questions in job interviews with prospective employers. Again, its challenging to grasp the full extent of a company culture in just a short interview. So, Li says, the very best thing you can do is to ask about the things you care about, whether its volunteering, flexibility, or collaboration. If you dont like the answer, its likely not the best fit. Having doubts about whether or not youre a suitable match with your new companys culture is enough to inspire panic and a feeling of total helplessness. But rest assured, there are steps you can take to improve your situation or, if necessary, move on professionally and respectfully.I firmly believe that you will be most su ccessful in an environment where you can be yourself, Li concludes. If you cant be genuine and authentic, it can be exhausting to try to assimilate to an environment you dont mesh with, and it ultimately prevents you from doing your best work.

But Dr. Olivia is not a doctor, or even a human- shes a Staffordshire terriernamed Ollie. So how did the ambitious end up on the editorial boards of seven global medical journals?Dog days of academiaOllies owner, Professor Mike Daube (reportedly of Curtin University) decided to test how carefully some journals scrutinised their editorial reviewers, by inventing Dr. Doll and making up her credentials.Australian publication PerthNow reportedCurtins story.Though Dr. Olivia Dolls bio clearly indicates shes not a real person,Daube said that the big journals didnt find her out.Check out, for instance, Olliescurrent listing as an editor for the Global Journal of Addiction and Rehabilitation Medicine. As the Huffington Post quipped, it looks like science has gone to the dogs.Luckily, Ollie has a nose to sniff out scams.

How social media can work for your business
How social media can work for your geschftliches miteinander How social media can work for your businessPosted October 13, 2011, by Josie Chun The popularity and ubiquity of social networking is forcing businesses to think hard, not only about how to regulate its use by employees, but how to take advantage of the business opportunities it presents. Many organisations are now using the connective power of social media to channel their employees social networking activity into positive and productive directions to enhance their reputation, productivity, innovation, collaboration and employee engagement. Here are some ways that social media at the workplace can be used for good, not evil. Productivity Believe it or not, social networking can actually boost your businesss productivity. More than half of the Fortune 100 companies have Twitter accounts, and two thirds of those use it to enhance productivity in areas such as customer service. For example, electronics retailer Best Buy rece ntly launched Twelpforce, which equips customer service representatives with Twitter accounts that they can use to answer customers questions. While some see this as just another gimmick, many claim that this has improved the customer service reps ability to efficiently help their customers. Employees could also use social media to share with other employees and discuss how theyve used it to improve their productivity or customer service and some companies even zustrom contests to see whos come up with the best idea. Collaboration Collaboration is critical to business success, and canny employers will take advantage of the opportunities for collaboration that social media offer. Virtual-meeting and collaboration applications will play an increasingly prominent role as teams and individuals become more and more dispersed in a in aller herren lnder environment where a laptop is all it takes to have a business meeting. Don Tapscott, author of Grown Up Digital, believes that youn ger generations will demand social media tools as a prerequisite for doing business. Social networks will become the new operating system of business, says Tapscott. Marketing, branding and public relations Of all the potential uses of social media, brand building is seen as the most promising. Fifty four per cent of Fortune 100 companies use Twitter to connect with customers, and 29 per cent have a fan page on Facebook. Companies such as IBM and Sony use social networks to spread their corporate news and establish dialogue with their customers and stakeholders. And while you may think that those in the top jobs dont have time for social networking, 30 per cent of CEOs have their own Facebook page. The days of leaders pulling strings from behind closed doors are being replaced by a new era of accessibility and community, thanks to social media. Reputation management Social networking has opened up new avenues for the instant dissemination of both positive and damaging feedback abo ut a company. In an era when branding, both personal and organisational, is more important than ever, one small tweet spread exponentially through cyberspace has the potential to make or break a companys reputation. Despite the occasional high-profile incident such as when Virgin Atlantic fired 13 flight attendants for posting their candid thoughts about the company on Facebook a recent Manpower survey shows that only four per cent of companies worldwide believe their reputation has been in any way damaged by social networking. Knowledge management Employees are an organisations greatest cache of knowledge, and social media offer new ways to unlock and organise that knowledge. Online communities have already become a powerful forum to connect people with similar personal or professional interests, enabling the capture and transfer of valuable information. Within an organisation, social networking can be used to discuss and disseminate new ideas, share best practices and foster mentoring relationships. Innovation Progressive companies are always looking for new ways to advance and innovate, and social media are opening up exciting new developments which allow them to improve their relationships and communications especially with those who have traditionally been hard to reach in a targeted and sustained way. IBM, for instance, has introduced Innovation Jams gigantic online brainstorming sessions attended by its global employees, partners and customers to garner new ideas which have led to dozens of new initiatives. Employee alignment and engagement The key to any companys success is its ability to keep employees intellectually and emotionally engaged in their work and social media provide the perfect medium for keeping employees aligned with a companys mission and vision. They can be used to encourage dialogue between leaders and employees, and foster a team mentality. Company-sponsored social networks can help connect teams in remote offices so t hat all employees remain connected and focused on their collective goal. Recruitment Professionally oriented social networks such as LinkedIn are particularly helpful for making business connections and recruiting prospective employees. A Deloitte study found that 23 per cent of companies already use social networking as a hiring aid. As an example, Manpowers operations in Greece use Facebook to host a monthly virtual open house where job candidates and clients can meet online, network and attend sessions on industry issues. Let employees develop their own guidelines Since social networking technologies and their uses change so quickly, any policies around their use should be flexible and fluid to evolve with the times. The best approach to governing social media activity is to let employees help develop and enforce your companys guidelines. This will promote trust and adherence to the guidelines that are then established, while allowing employees to own the process. Social netw orking should be integrated into your companys overall practices rather than be seen as an extraneous or frivolous activity. For the millennial generation, access to social media will simply be taken as a given, rather than a special privilege. Leaders need to see that social media can actually help their organisation and should look to their own employees for ideas about how it can best be used. This sort of technological change leads to new ways of working and by embracing change rather than resisting, organisations can help give themselves a competitive edge. This study finds that men are more susceptible to Imposter Syndrome than we thought
This study finds that men are mora susceptible to Imposter Syndrome than we thoughtThis study finds that men are more susceptible to Imposter Syndrome than we thoughtIf you think women are the only ones dealing with Imposter Syndrome you would be wrong. Imposter Syndrome, which was a term first coined in the 1970s, revolves around the concept of feeling like you are not good enough for the role you are in and the fear that your fraud will be discovered. It is believed that more women tend to experience Imposter Syndrome as a result of social conditioning. However in anewexploratory paper, publishedinPersonality and Individual Differences, researchers found that more men may experience Imposter Syndrome, especially when amplified by stress. Men also feel the pressure of social conditioning in that they men are expected to be successful. The study used hundreds of female and male undergrad students and then gave them a scale to rate themselves with items they could select like Sometimes Im afraid others will discover how much knowledge or ability I really lack as well as verbal and numerical questions. Then the researchers gave half the students fake negative feedback saying they had answered the questions incorrectly.Men are more sensitive to negative feedbackInterestingly the results found thateven though overall more women reported having Imposter Syndrome, it was the feedback that affected the men more. The male students reported higher anxiety and then made less effort on tasks they were asked to do resulting in poorer performances. The male students who received positive feedback had better performances. And even more interestingly the women who also heard the negative feedback and were experiences feelings of imposter syndrome, responded to this feedback by working harder and then performing better.Assuming that traditional gender norms hold, males with imposter syndrome may have exhibited stronger negative reactions because they believe that society at larg e values males who demonstrate high competence and at the same time, do not believe that they can fulfil this standard, the researchers said. The research team suggested that managers should encourage mentoring of their male employees.

7 Job Search Myths Debunked for 2017
7 Job Search Myths Debunked for 20177 Job Search Myths Debunked for 2017somany ways to get hired, it can be difficult to figure out which job search strategies are worth your while, and which are not. Fact is, if you fall for some popular job search myths, it can be like falling down the job search rabbit hole- and a waste of your precious time. What job search myths should you be on the lookout for? There are a ton of them out there that need to be debunked. With a bit of research, we came up with a few job search myths to be aware of if youre looking for flexible jobs in the new year. Here are seven job search myths debunked for 20171. Its hard to find legitimate flexible work online. As technology continues to have a huge impact on the workplace, mora employers are finding it to their advantage to embrace flexible work options. For job searchers, that means an ever-increasing number of employers worldwide thatare offering flexible jobs that allow for remote work, part-time schedules, job sharing, freelancing, and other flexible options.2. Getting past an applicant tracking system is all but impossible- or youll get through automatically. Many employers use applicant tracking systems (ATS)- software that helps them manage large volumes of job applicants. First off, its good for job applicants to know about how hiring managers use applicant tracking systems.Once you understand ATS strategies, study up on how to break through online application systems- it can be done, despite job search myths to the contrary.3. Many of the best job openings are never made public.Perhaps one of the biggest mythsis a misconception that stymies many job searchers. And that is, most job opening are never made public. But heres the deal its nottrue (as many job seekers believe) that up to 80 percent of job openings are filled via networking or word of mouth. Its a moldy idea that dates back more than 40 years. Whats true today is that most applicants find jobs using a wide variety of pla tforms like job boards, social media, career sites, and recruiting agencies.4. Cover letters dont count.Far from being a time-sucking effort that gets you nowhere, writing a titelblatt letter that workscan sometimes make a big difference in whether you get the job. Among the advantages to writing a well-thought-out, strategic cover letter are that it lets your personality shine through, and allows you to highlight skills targeted to the specific position. It also keeps you from being automatically rejected in many cases, especially when the employer requires a cover letter as part of the application process.5. An interview follow-up isnt necessary. If youve had a great interview, whether by phone, online, or in person, its imperative to follow up with a note or email. One of the worse signals you can send after youve impressed a potential employer is, well, radio silence. Not offering even a thank you for your time or a note that says what the interview highlights were for you can be t he difference between making the cut, or not.6. Flooding the market will result in more job offers. Its true that, often, employers dont respond to job applications. But that doesnt necessarily mean that flooding the market will increase your chances of getting responses, and job offers.Employers uses social media and other platforms just like you do, and if they come across your resume here, there, and everywhere, the chances that they will want to hire you may be greatly diminished.7. Self-Discovery Through Me Dates
Self-Discovery Through Me DatesSelf-Discovery Through Me DatesThe urban dictionary defines me dates as an enjoyable evening spent alone where one treats themselves as if they were their own date. I heard about the concept of me dates only a few months ago. During ur first date, my girlfriend told me she does them every now and then as a way to reconnect with herself. As she was telling me how shed take herself to a gallery or a dinner, I realized it wasnt something I do and I was feeling uncomfortable to do. I wanted to overcome this fear. I challenged myself to do me dates regularly and use them as a tool for my weekly self-discovery. Why I do me datesI go on a me date to slow down, mind myself, and listen to myself. That helps me to regain my sense of myself and to feel content. Ive done it to celebrate a professional win, such as fruitful discussions on lessons learned on ur past hiring. Ive done it when I had moved to my new apartment and wasnt quite settled there yet. I do me da tes when I recognize a situation that requires time and space to reflect on the concerns, thoughts, or emotions it brings. When I look after myself, I also have the energy and focus to deliver at work, as well as the compassion and patience to help or mentor others on the team. BackgroundIts been a few crazy months now personally and professionally separating with my long term ex after 8 years togethermeeting my girlfriend and madly falling in love with herhaving a 4-day overlap between the previous and new personal chapters in my lifescreening for naming agencies to work on our rebranding launching a new products beta exploring Lisbon for a month with Volen, our co-founder, and COOcoming back to Dublin, moving to a new place introducing our co-founder CEO Georgi to the Dublin startup scene during his 3 weeks here What my last me date was likeLast week, both the post-breakup shock and the madly-in-love adrenaline were gone for the first time and it felt like a low point. All of tha t had been taking a lot of my energy, like a full-time job, yet on the side of my real full-time job. On Friday I went home early, just after 4 pm and slept for a couple of hours. Then, I reviewed the summary of the first round of company name proposals as part of our ongoing rebranding. At 7 pm I was starving and wanted to focus on myself. I felt hungry for a me date, a solo experience, personal adventure, whatever you want to call it and I dressed up. I put a couple of things in my tote bag. My notebook where I put down my thoughts. My current read, a red book called What I Know about Running Coffee Shops by 3fes creator Colin Harmon.I love reads about businesses that have nothing or almost nothing to do with tech. They are not prescriptive, yet I find them insightful and inspirational. They allow me to draw parallels between existing challenges at work and how others solved them in the non-tech environment so I can come up with an alternative solution to the challenge Im tacklin g. My long term favorite is Let My People Go Surfing by Patagonias founder Yvon Chouinard. My plan for the me date was to go to the off license in Stoneybatter to discover a few new craft beers, then have a fresh nutritious salad with gorgeous saucy sweet tomatoes for dinner, and then chill at home. 30min later I sent the following to the team in our facebook group chat After the casual dinner and some reading at Cotto, I walked down to Smithfield and towards Capel street to rest at home. I didnt do anything extraordinary, but it felt extraordinary to enjoy the sunshine, discover new craft beers, read, take myself out for a walk, and treat myself as if I was my own date. The me date finished with a glass of Founders Frootwood beer as a dessert. What did I discover or realize that day? It was a reminder to myself that before you help others, you must first help yourself. After the me date I felt content. I had created and dedicated time and space to myself, to my thoughts and emotions . I can only compare the feeling to the way a meditation restarts the body, the mind, and the soul to prepare them for the next adventures and challenges.Related articlesThe 11 tools you should use to create your personal brandFrom uninspired to proud.
